Creative Introduction
Begin the lesson by stating, "Tonight we will be studying "Service" and that we have alot to go over so, we will get right to it". Open the book and begin reading the legend...after a few minutes a knock should come at the door, answer it.
YOU: "Yes."
VOLUNTEER ONE: "I can¥t find my mom, last time I saw her she was in the choir room, have you seen her?"
YOU: "_____(child¥s name) no, I haven¥t, we are having class here, can¥t you go look again? I¥m sure she is somewhere."
Shut the door and resume the story. After a few more minutes....another knock, you answer...
YOU: "Yes."
VOLUNTEER TWO: "Uh, hello. I seem to have a flat and I pulled into your parking lot to change it but, I cannot find my jack, could I use your phone?"
YOU: "Well....we are kinda having a class in here but, if you¥ll go wait down by the main sanctuary someone will be there soon."
Shut the door, shake your head and say, "Now where were we"? Be seated and resume the story. Soon another knock, this time look agitated and instruct one of the Youth to answer the door. It is the Pastor and he enters the room...
YOU: (pointedly) "Yes."
VOLUNTEER THREE: "I am sorry to interrupt but, we have had a mishap in the boy¥s restroom, someone left the sink water running and it has spilled over, could I have a young man to help me with the mopping?"
YOU: (no matter what their response) "Well, we are studying a very important aspect of this discipleship class and one which I have prepared for extensively...I would hate for any of them to miss out, is there any others you might ask?"
VOLUNTEER THREE: (looking confused) "O.K., yes, maybe I can do it before my interview, thanks."
As he leaves resume reading but, make sure the door gets shut. Soon a loud ruckus begins in the hallway (running, whistling, calling, doors slamming, bumps, etc.) Snap the book shut and quickly open the door.
YOU: "Hello, (with attitude) what¥s going on out here?"
VOLUNTEER FOUR: "Oh, hello. Sorry for the noise. My friend came to church tonight but, his dog followed him and he accidently got in the through the door and we are looking for him. He aint in there is he?"
YOU: (coldly)"No, and we are trying to have a discipleship class in here, PLEASE keep it down."
Resume and finish the story. At the end of the story say, "I know that this story is about hopes and dreams but, let¥s put service in there also...the first tree SERVED as the manger, the second SERVED as the pulpit for Christ, the third tree SERVED as the Cross on which Christ died.
Point 1 of Main Point:
Then say, "Why Serve" and read from the manual "The dead sea is dead because only takes in" by Chris Priebe.
Point 2 of Main Point:
Have the class find Matthew 25:31-46 in their Bible¥s and then read while they follow along "Sheep and goats" by Chris Priebe. As you finish reading look up and say, "How did you feel about how our "interruptors" were treated tonight?" Talk about this for awhile, brainstorming ways it should have been handled--such as helping the boy find the dog, sending help with the Pastor, finding someone with a jack, helping to change the tire, showing where the phone is, helping the little boy find his mom, etc. End by asking, "Do you want to be a sheep or a goat?"
Point 3 of Main Point:
Tell the class to flip back to Page 1 of Service in their manuals and read aloud the response by deecee4jaycee--move to the "boat illustration" wall and repeat the line..."how can I know that Jesus Saves and not share this with the ones I love or those that are lost?" Take a marker and write on a person that is "throwing a line" or "offering a hand" your name. Say, "I want to be a sheep." (Do not ask for the group to add their names....let them think on this awhile.)
Closing Illustration and Applications:
Instruct the group to turn to page three of Service and read aloud "True religion includes caring for others" by Chris Priebe and the response by deecee4jaycee. Then, tell the class that you are having a "day of service" this Saturday at 9 a.m. where you will all meet at the church and then, go out and SERVE the community.
Show them the Sign Up sheet and have them sign up as "GOD LEADS THEM".
NOTE: YOU MUST BE ABLE TO FULFILL THE SERVICES EVEN IF YOU GET NO VOLUNTEERS SO, BE CAREFUL.
