Beginning Right - The GospelWhat is the Gospel? It means good news by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12The word gospel means "good news". As Christians we have something really good and exciting to talk about. If we took the illustration of being in a boat and people all around us where drowing in the water. We have good news to bring them, "Look, here is a life-preserver, grab ahold of it and you will be fine!"

Why do we need Good news?Because humanity has fallen away from God by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12The Bible begins with the words, "In the beginning" and it goes on to tell how God created everything there is, sat back and said, "It is good!" How much joy it must have brought Him to see all the beauty He had made. Imagine the beauty of the forest, the mountains and all the animals that ran on the Earth. And best of all, God created our parents, Adam and Eve and smiled with joy. He placed them in a wonderful garden and walked with them. It was this intimacy of relationship that He created them for. But how can they truly have a relationship if one was forced to love the other? So God gave man freedom - the freedom to choose. Choose what? Whether they would follow God or do their own thing. It was quite simple really. They could have the joy of eating from any tree in the garden except for one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. An appropriate name for when one ate of it they would have broken God´s commands and know for the first time what it is like to do evil. But the Devil came along and with sly words made them doubt the love of God. They wanted to do their own thing (and so has been the pattern for years to come) and they took the fruit and ate it and in so doing disobeyed God. God came, found them hiding from Him, because we hide from God when we know we have done wrong, it seperates us. He had said that if they ate of it they would die and as much as He loved them He had to keep His word (or He would be a liar and unfit to be the God and judge of all). Death came to earth and with it pain and hardships. It was not God´s fault, man chose to walk away from God and when they did nothing was ever the same again. estamosuno writes on 2001-06-26

We suffer hell on Earth because of that by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12Sin did not stop with Adam and Eve. Some have said to me that they do not think it is fair that we should all suffer for the decision that they made. But don´t we all make that same decision every time we choose to do our own thing instead of follow God, even if it is as small as eating a piece of fruit? And so people kept choosing to walk away from God. Cain, the son of Adam, killed his brother Abel. Lamech, the descendant of Cain killed a man and boasted. After awhile people grew so bad that God was even grieved He had created man and so He flooded the entire Earth and saved only Noah and his family. Yet soon it started again, Noah was drunk, the tower of Babel was built (Gen. 11), Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed (Gen 19) Some people struggle with the idea of hell. I just look around me and I do not have a problem believing in hell. Hell perhaps could be generalized as seperation from God. When a murderor chooses not to follow God and kills someone, that is hell. When a drunk gets in a car and drives down the road, that is hell. When a person comes home from 40 years of work and is left empty because it never filled the God shaped vacuum in their soul, it is hell. Whenever people choose not to have God in their life it is hell because hell is where God is absent. We can even say that the cancer patient is going through hell because God seems so far away to many. Some people wonder why there is suffering on earth. It is because people have chosen not to follow God and that turns this world that God has said is good into a hell as we ever-increasingly cast Him out of our life. And good people suffer because they live in this world where we all make choices. gailrei writes on 2000-11-22

We will suffer hell forever if there is no good news by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12But this world is not hell. God is still present here with us and people still choose to follow God in some ways. Yet a day will come when God shall give us what we wanted. To those who wanted to follow God and believed in Jesus to forgive them for all their sins they shall have their wildest dream - an entire eternity to follow the God they love so much! To those who did not want God to be a part of their life, even the good people who just wanted to do it on their own, to those who never trusted God (even those who wanted Heaven but tried to earn it themself) they shall get what they wanted, an eternity where they do not need God and they can have their own way. As we have already discussed, our own way apart from God results in pain and so our own way completely would result in complete pain. Some do not feel that a God of love would do such a thing but it is from the words of Jesus, who showed love more than any other and is the very God of love, who spoke repeatedly about a place where, "their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched" (Mark 9:48 ). (If you click here you can see a word study on the words "hell, worm, fire, and punishment" and see many times where Jesus, the God of love but also of justice, spoke the hard truth - NOTE: since it shows all occurances, check context as some don´t apply) Personally, I hate the concept of hell and would do almost anything to stop it. Fortunately, God feels the same and did give practically everything. restless_poet writes on 2000-12-22

The more we understand sin and hell, the more precious the g by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12So why all this talk on hell? For starters, because it is real and it is only until we understand the reality of what we have gotten ourselves into that we really grasp the greatness of what God has done for us. It is a miracle really. This sounds harsh but in reality every time we choose to sin we have lifted our arm against God and said, "Forget you God, I´m not going to follow your way, I am going to do whatever I please!" In return, we should expect His wrath but instead we find His love. It is this God who came down to Earth, suffered beyond imagination at our hands, and died for us. It should have been us upon that cross but Jesus took our place. He took away our hell. One time I was leading communion (a ceremony where we remember what Jesus has done for us) and in the middle of the service one old saint who had walked with God´s more years than I have lived cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, have mercy on me a sinner!" It was silent and the silence drove the message deep into my soul. God died for me, a sinner. I can never in all eternity exhaust my gratitude and worship to a God like that. deecee4jaycee writes on 2001-06-27

My Search Is Over by moseleys, 2001-01-25John 3:16 is telling me that my search is over. I´ve spent the last twenty years of my life looking for love that would fulfill me. John 3:16 speaks of a love, that I had no idea existed. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. This is the good news! Tell it in the bars, the singles clubs, the crack houses, Beverly Hills, tell it to the spiritually bankrupt and broken. The good news of the gospel is because of God´s love, not my goodness, not my pedigree, or ethnicity will buy me eternal life. I´ve been washed,

God´s Solution - the Kingdom of GodIt has been God´s plan for a long time by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12I cannot imagine the pain of God in how for years He has watched His most loved creation walk away from Him and suffer the pain of that choice. For years He moved His hand over history and set into action the most amazing plan that has ever been concieved - He would bring them back! Even at the very beginning of the problem when mankind fell away from God in the garden He already had a plan in store. He said to the Devil, "And I will put enmity [fighting] between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he [notice it is singular] will crush your head [fatal blow], and you will strike his heel [even as nails went through Christ´s feet on the cross]." (Gen 3:15) And then finally the right time came and God Himself came into this world and He proclaimed, "The Kingdom of God is near!" (Mark 1:15 ) For all these years people had been in the kingdom of darkness, the kingdom of self, the kingdom of doing it without God (whatever name we might give it) but now they have the opportunity to enter into the Kingdom of God, where He is present and the relationship is right once more. deecee4jaycee writes on 2001-06-27

People were expecting a physical kingdom by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12But Jesus shocked many people because He was not what they were expecting. They had heard that God was going to send someone who was going to save them. For years they had been in bondage. At first it was to the Assyrians, then the Babylonians and now the Romans. They wanted a King who would gather up his army and drive out the Romans and establish their physical kingdom again. And so they did not understand Him, at least those that expected this from Him. They got upset when He spent His time with sinners and sick people. They rejected His message and they hung Him on a cross. Melanie writes on 0000-00-00

But Jesus´ kindom is in the heart by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12But Jesus did not come to conquer Romans but to conquer sin. He did not come to build His kingdom on Earth but to build it in people´s hearts It was common thought then even as it is now that righteousness is something one does on the outside (go to Church, pray, dress nice) but Jesus cut straight to the issue and said that true rightness before God comes out of the heart. He says "out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimonly, slander" (Mt 14:19 ) If we only try to change the outside we are just a bunch of tombs painted nice on the outside but with rotting bones on the inside (Mt 23:27). We must be cleansed on the inside and that is what He came to do. This is something we cannot do on out own, only He could clean us and not anything we can do on our own. deecee4jaycee writes on 2001-06-27

His ministry shows this conquest against hell by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12And since His kingdom is not physical but of the heart He sought to cure the heart and drive out the forces of hell. And so we find Him casting out demons, healing the sick, loving the hurting. He proclaims about His ministry, "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has annointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord´s favor." (Lk 4:18,19 ) And so He went throughout the land, teaching in their religious meetings, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people (Mt. 4:23; 9:35) Some questioned Him and said that it was by the Devil He had the power to cast out demons, Jesus answered,
It is this arguement which Mark builds in His Gospel. In chapter 1 He is the one with the power to overcome temptation, has the blessing of the Father, the one worthy of following. He has authority over demons and disease. In chapter 2 He is seen as He who has authority to forgive sins and has authority over the law. In chapter 3 He is the one greater than Satan because He is binding him up and plundering him. Chapter 4 shows He is king over nature, chapter 5 He has power to do what no one else could ever do and completely transform a mad-man into perfectly sain. He has power to raise the dead. Chapter 6 He is greater than physics and can divide bread and walk on water. When He is transfigured people finally catch a glimpse of His glory and the power of the kingdom. And all these things proclaim with a resounding voice, "Jesus Christ is the King of kings and the Lord of lords" and the King has come to deliver His people from the dungeon of sin and hell and bring them into the Kingdom of God.. Called people to follow Him by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12And the King stood on the beach of the human soul and called people to come to Him, "Follow me." (Mk 1:17; 2:14) It is interesting that He did not run after the great and those the world thought were worthy but He came for people like you and me - sinners. And what did He do when He found us? The same as He has been doing all along. He says, "Come, follow me" And we got up and followed after Him. It is difficult for us to understand followership today. To us, royalty is something we put on the back of our currency, it is only a figurehead - a symbol with no power to follow through. And as a democracy if we do not like our present rulers we just vote them out in the next election. But Jesus is not calling us to wear Him as a cross around our neck, a symbol that sometimes never touches the heart protected by the skin between the two. No, He wants to be more than a symbol but the guiding light that steers our path through this rocky way called life. He wants us to imitate and learn from Him, to walk in His steps. He wants to be the Lord of our life, the first concern of all our decisions and affections. Neither does He want to be the kind of king we can vote out when He no longer serves our purpose. It is strange that some come forward to give their life for Christ and then walk away shortly after. In this day and age where we go to the store and buy something and take it back I fear that is how we treat Christ. We simply try Him out and then when hard times come we give up. No, Jesus is and wants us to recognize that He is King no matter how we feel and what we might go through. It is from that position we will find His help through our problems. Cost of that is high by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12And so salvation is no light matter. Jesus said, "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters - yes, even his own life - he cannot be my disciple. " (Lk 14:25-26 ) What does Jesus mean by this passage? I believe He is saying that if you are not willing to give up everything you hold dear and follow Him then you cannot be His follower (since you will not be following). Sometimes when I share the Gospel with young people they are concerned about what their parents will think (this is especially true of other cultures). They fear that they might be rejected by their parents or friends and so they postpone the decision over and over again. It is only when they decide to follow Christ no matter what others may think that they begin an exciting journey. He says, "and anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." (Mt. 10:38,39) What a powerful picture. In those days the idea of a cross did not carry the meaning of a nice golden symbol one wears around the neck (though there is nothing wrong with that) but it was the picture of a painful death. When one picked up their cross it meant that they had been sentenced to death and they had to reach down and pick up their own beam that they would hang on. They marched down the streets suffering the jeers and ridicule of all. There was no turning back. And Jesus calls us to die to our old way of life and to join Him down the streets of suffering for the ultimate goal of the salvation of others. deecee4jaycee writes on 2001-06-27

But they were not worried about the cost by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12With all this emphasis on the high cost of salvation sometimes we feel that we can never do it and like the Rich Young Ruler we want to walk away (Mt. 19:16-30). Perhaps that is the point, we need to be completely dependant on God for only God can save us. We simply throw ourselves before the King and ask that He can save us, believing that He will. We come as we are, and that is all He wants. In reality, when we come to Christ we are not too concerned about giving up all to follow Him. We have come to realize that all the things we want to hold onto never have filled us and only God can fill that emptiness within. All that we are concerned about is having God. Jesus says the Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, sold all he had and in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field (Mt. 13:44) We are like that man. We have come across the greatest treasure that could ever be. With joy we surrender our all, our only fear might be that someone we might miss out on such a great deal. lenblaides writes on 2000-12-14

How to enter the kingdom - compared to a bridgeBegin by learning about Jesus by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12Saving faith is not something which happens overnight but is often the process of a long journey. We begin with very little faith at all and then something happens and we begin to wonder if perhaps there is a God. Over time we find ourselves asking questions and even exploring the Bible. We hear about Jesus and we become interested in Him. We like His teachings and we find that our beliefs begin to slowly change. We become convinced that He is far more than a good teacher and His teachings become more serious to us. In essence, we fall in love with Him and we begin to want to follow Him all our days. At some point we understand that He died and rose again so we can be free from the bondage of our sins and can be forgiven. We might struggle with that at first but it begins to make sense and we believe it is true. It becomes more personal where Jesus did not simply die for humanity but He died for me. Up to this point we have not made a decision to follow Him and take His gift but we have been exploring it. We now stand at the edge of cliff per say and we are challenged to take a leap of faith. For some it is like jumping into darkness, hearing only God calling them. They are afraid but they trust Him enough to leap out and pray He catches them. Colette writes on 2001-01-31

Leave the old life (which is repentance) by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12If salvation can be compared to crossing a bridge then the one side of the bridge begins at the top of the cliff we stand on when we are about to recieve Him. This side of the gap is the kingdom of self, where we have tried to be the boss of our own life without God. It all started when Adam and Eve rebelled against God. It was as if they left the one side where God is and set up a camp of rebels on the other. Inbetween them grew a large gap that no one could cross. Slowly we have been leaving the camp of rebels and walking towards the edge, getting closer and closer to accepting God´s lordship and leaving our own. Now we stand on the edge and we have to make a decision. Shall we leave our old life as we know it with all it´s security and ways? Shall we give up the freedom of being Lord of our own life and submit to God? What we are being called to is repentance. This word simply means to have a change of mind or a change of direction. We were walking one way and now we have turned around and are following God. Sometimes we are in such a hurry to get people saved we forget to remind them of the implication of that salvation. That is, if you are going to cross the bridge back to God then that means you will have to leave your old ways and begin in God´s. You can´t stand on both sides of the gap. Paul (one of the earliest Christian leaders) describes the Gospel in this way, "I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus." (Acts 20:21 ) and "I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds." (Acts 26:20 ) And so we must have both faith and repentance. One of the greatest chapters on the need for repentance was written by the brother of Jesus (James 2:14-26) robinbirdd writes on 2000-12-27

Be carried over (which is faith) by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12When I used to teach this topic at camp I used to take a really long solid board and place it between two points. On the one side I described how we had walked away from God and were living in sin and rebellion. On the other side I talked about how we are seeking to follow God and are in a right relationship with Him. Between them was this board which I used to represent the cross and how it makes it possible for us to cross from one side to the other. I would ask for some volunteers and I would stand them up on one side without the board there. I would ask them to jump as far as they could and see if they could make it to the other side. No one has done it yet, it is just too far. Likewise no one has been able to save themself. It does not matter how many good deeds we do, how many times we go to Church, help elderly ladies across the street, or are actively involved in any relgious system it will never be able to save us. The only way to get rid of sin is to have it payed for and only Jesus is able to pay such a high price. Then I put the board across and tell them how Jesus died in our place and how because He never sinned He is able to give a perfect sarcrifice and so His death can pay for our sins. Then I stand on one side of the board and ask one of them to jump onto my back. I ask the camper if he/she trusts me. Likewise we need to trust Christ and He will carry us from one side to the other. Other implication is you want to follow Jesus by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12I mentioned that one implication of crossing from one side to the other is that you are leaving one side (repenting). The other implication is that your goal is to go over to the other side. It would be ridiculous to think of someone to cross over who had no desire to follow Jesus. The very reason anyone would want to be saved is so they could finally be free to walk in a relationship with God. Chris Priebe writes on 2001-05-17

The decision is expressed in prayer by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12After I have discussed these things with our young people I am left with a question, "How do I cross over?" So far, I have been talking about faith, trust, repentance and desire but how does one know if they have really "done it" or that their faith is genuine enough? I answer this by giving them a way to express their faith, repentance and desire in the form of a prayer. The words of the prayer itself are not what really matters but it is the persons faith that God will indeed hear them and save them. We call it many things in our youth group, "Doing business with God" "Taking the Gift" "Saying Yes" but the point is the same. They have thought it through and they have come to a decision, they want to be saved. Here is an example of what we might pray. I often just say the words and they repeat after me or they can just say what is on their heart.

AssuranceSome people struggle with being sure they are saved by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12I remember when I was younger how everytime someone preached the Gospel I silently said a little prayer and asked Jesus into my heart again. Why? Well, I wondered if I had done it wrong or if I had really meant it. So I kept doing it. In reality, God saved me the first time and I only have to do it once. What happens though (especially for younger children) is that we grow up in our faith and as the years go by we understood salvation far better than when we were four. But it is faith that saves. I think there are three main reasons why people struggle with the question of whether they are saved or not - Some of them have no desire to follow God and so God has not given them peace because He wants them to repent - Others struggle with a doubt that God can really forgive them for some bad thing they have done - Others just aren´t sure if there faith has been enough We will deal with these three in order SheriA writes on 2000-12-17

Are you desiring to live like a Christian? by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12When I used to struggle with assurance I was told to read 1 John but I did not find it very comforting at the time. Its message in short was, if youre a Christian youll live like one. Consider some of the following Scriptures that communicate that. (Mt. 7:15-23; 1 Jn 1:5b,6; 1 Jn 2:6; 1 Jn 3:7,8) And the greatest sign of walking with Jesus is to love even as Jesus loved. Consider this: If one has truly experienced the greatest love in the world would one not be transformed by it? Would that person not know what love is? Wouldn´t that person be so full of love that they want to love all those around them. Consider some of the following passages ( 1 Jn 3:23; John 13:34,25 ; 1 Jn 4:8; 1 Jn 2:9; 1 Jn 3:14-20) Explanation: It is easiest to explain this by examining what has happened to us and what the result of that was. When we became Christians we crossed from one side of the gap to the other. This was a process of both faith and repentance. We are now on the other side with God, adopted as His children, born again. Our life is no longer the same. In fact, since we are Gods children we will be like Him. Our desire will be to follow Him. He has forgiven us from all our sins and now we are free. We do not go on deliberately sinning but we left that life of rebellion. Now it is our desire to walk with God. So we seek to follow Him. Sometimes we fail but Jesus speaks to the Father on our behalf and has made payment for our sins. Moreover, when we were saved we experienced love in the greatest form ever - Jesus death for us. Now we know by experience what true love is and since God is love and we walk with God, we walk in love. We love God and so we keep His commands - which are to have faith and to love each other. Our life radiates the love coming from the Father and so we lay down our lives for each other even as Jesus laid down His life for us. We have the Holy Spirit within us and He confirms these things. Conclusion: Therefore, if ones life is not marked by a belief that Jesus is the Christ, a life that seeks to follow God, and a heart that loves each other than it is right that we do not feel assurance of our salvation. It is important then that we return to the basic explanation of the Gospel and to determine if we have indeed embraced it. And if we have then we need to do business with God and straighten some things out. deecee4jaycee writes on 2001-07-04

Then stand on God´s promise, you are forgiven! by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12Often what I will do when someone is struggling with the thought of whether they are saved or not or whether God would accept them or not is I take them to the passage that says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteounsess." ( 1 Jn. 1:9) I asked them if they have confessed their sins? I ask them how many sins does the passage say we will be forgiven for? All. So what does that mean? You are forgiven. We can stand on that as a promise of God and whenever the Devil wants to tell us otherwise we can pull out our Bible and see that we are okay. Other promises in the Bible by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12God loves me and I´m His child: ( 1 John 3:1 ). In today´s world it is often very difficult for people to believe that they can be loved or accepted, even by God. One of the great things that happens when we are saved is we become one of God´s children. His love for us is that great! Imagine the relationship of a perfect father (the word perfect is important because some hate their fathers today) and his child. How many will be made His children? John 1:12 says that ALL who believe are made His children. Even the person who does not feel worthy or does not believe God could ever love them is made His child. I have the Holy Spirit: When a person receives Christ they also receive the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:9; 1 Cor 12:13) They do not have to wait till they have proved themselves but God gives them the Holy Spirit right away. This is significant because the Holy Spirit not only empowers the person but it is God´s way of giving us a guarantee that one day we will be in Heaven (Eph 1:13,14 ; 2 Cor 1:20-22) I have died to my old life and raised to a new life: (Rom 6:1-10; Gal 2:20 ). Some people feel that all their old sins and their old way of life just won´t go away. The enemy keeps coming to them and telling them about all the bad things they have done in the past or he tells them that they are not free. But God gives us this hope, our old life is dead and we are raised with Christ to a new life. We are no longer bound to the things which once held us. Chris Priebe writes on 2000-12-27

Seal your decision by being baptized by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12Purpose: Sometimes I fear that for some the meaning of baptism has been covered over by a ritual that is just tacked on as an optional extra of something we should do. Baptism, like marriage, is a symbol of one´s lifelong commitment that serves as a visual reminder that one has indeed entered into a relationship and there is no turning back. This is why I put it under assurance because whenever we doubt we need to simply remember that we already dealt with the question and our answer was proclaimed in our baptism. Discussion: Suppose two people fell in love and wanted to get married. One of their friends says don´t bother with a fancy ceremony because it costs to much, takes too much time and you have to stand in front of all those people. Just say "I do" and begin to live with each other. It does not make a difference. Another friend however insists that the ceremony is vital for the marriage to be legitimate. Let´s consider both sides, in what ways are they right and wrong? Would it make a difference on their marriage relationship if they had a ceremony? In what way? Ceremonies: Ceremonies form an important part in helping us transition from one stage of life to the next. Marriage marks the dividing point between singleness and marriage. Graduation marks the dividing point between being a student and being an adult. Birthday parties mark the division between being young and being older. Funerals mark our transition from our life with someone to our life without them. We often mark these times of changing from one stage of our life to another with signs symbols and ceremonies. Israel and rivers: For 400 years God´s people had been in Egypt and for many of those years they were slaves. Finally they cried out to God and He delivered them out of Egypt and brought them to the shore of the Red Sea. The Egyptian army was coming down upon them and God miraculously made a path right through the Red Sea on dry land (Ex. 14) And so they went through the Red Sea, with all their old life behind them and their new life before them. They came out and the gap closed in, there was no return by that route. It was this Sea that serves as a dividing line between their life in Egypt and their new life with God. And then again when the next generation was ready to enter the promised land God made the Jordon river dry up and the people crossed over there too. And one person from each tribe took a stone and piled it up as a lasting monument so that in the years to come when their children asked why they were there they would tell the story of what God did and they would know God is powerful and they would fear Him. ( Joshua 3-4 ) And so it is that God wants to establish a sign in our life that we can look back on and remember what God has done. How He has taken us from our old life and brought us to a new life and how there is no return. The meaning of baptism: Read Rom 6:1-4. Baptism is a symbol that we have died to our old life of sin - that is we have left it even as the Israelites left their old way of life. It is not salvation but it our proclamation that we have decided to be saved. That we have decided to give up control of our life and submit to God. To give up our sin and rebellion, to confess that we cannot save ourself and need God to save us. This verse tells us we are united with Christ. When He died, we died. Our old life is gone. That is why we are placed under the water, it is a symbol of going down with Christ into the grave. Our old life is gone. Then when we come up out of the water it is a symbol that we are raised with Christ. We are born again. We are a new creation. We are washed, we are cleansed, forgiven. We have a new start. Baptism and Assurance: Baptism then, like marriage, has to do with putting a signature behind one´s commitment. It is saying, "I will follow Jesus, I will give up my old life." It is not a decision to be made lightly just as salvation is not to be made lightly. Once a person has wrestled with the question, "Will I follow God" and has come to an answer then they should be baptized. And then whenever the question comes up, "Am I going to follow God or walk away?" Or "Am I really a Christian?" The answer is already written down in this one event and these questions can be dismissed as irrelevant. Where to from here? If you have decided to follow Jesus no matter what then you should be baptised. Speak to one of the Church leaders and discuss why you would like to be baptized, where you are with Christ and what baptism means to you. They will help answer questions and provide direction and help you to perform this important ceremony. SpiritualAdrenaline writes on 2001-06-26

How to share the GospelDon´t have to know it all by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12I hope that this will be one of the greatest encouragements to you - you really don´t have to know it all - in fact, you´ll never on this Earth know it all. I look back on when I was just getting going for God, I knew almost nothing but I just went out there (with great fear and trembling but compeled by love) and shared what I knew. When I did not know what to say, God just popped it into my head at just the right time. The neat thing was that was enough for that time and people got saved or grew in their faith. I still remember my first sermon (it is perhaps the best I´ve ever preached) It was on the topic of living for God, I did not know much about how to live for God but I just prayed my guts out and stood up there and challenged everyone to do it. I haven´t seen such a response since. My point is, just go with what you´ve got and God will bless it. By the way, your just a messenger anyway. You don´t have to fancy it up or make people believe it or make it all make sense, all you have to do is deliver the message of God that He wants to save peopel and has done what it takes to do it. To close, I leave you with a cool verse Jesus said to His disciples, "But when they arrest you [scarry hugh?], do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you." (Mt. 10:19,20) deecee4jaycee writes on 2001-07-04

It is God who saves people by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12Here´s another concept I have found very freeing. I don´t have to save anyone because it is God who saves them. So when I am talking to a friend and they just do not get it or they just are not convinced, I don´t have to drive them nuts trying to force them to understand and believe. In fact, all I do is just tell people the truth in love and enourage them to accept it. Then I step back and let God continue the work. Later He might bring me back to talk some more but it is God who will get them saved, not me. So never pressure anyone or feel you have to do it. Dot Owens writes on 2001-01-31

People will notice you are different by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12The greatest way of telling others about Jesus is to show them by your life. People want to see God and the easiest way for them to see Him is through you. The neat thing is that whether you recognize it or not people will be noticing a change in your life. Sometimes they will even ask you what is different and then you can share the story of what God has been doing in your life (and that just blows people´s socks off to hear that God actually is involved in someone´s life). faith writes on 2001-07-04

Listen by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12It is said that there is a reason God gave us two ears and one mouth. I don´t know if you have ever had a salesman come to your door. It seems that as soon as they come in all they want to do is sell you their product, they are not interested in you or your health or whatever just to make a buck. We need to be really careful not to peddle the gospel because this too can be very annoying and turn someone who was interested into someone who wants to stay a long way off. When I meet someone I try to listen to them as much as I can. I want to know who they are as a person, what they like and hate, how they are. Only once I have truly listened and they know I care about them as a person will they care about the One I hold to be most dear. One of my professors in Bible school said over and over again, "People won´t care how much you know until they know how much you care" deecee4jaycee writes on 2001-07-04

Keep it simple by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12Sometimes I get so excited about all the good things of God that I just want to dump all the details on the table right away. The problem is that I make things so complicated and confusing that they don´t know how to even get saved. So it comes back to the old acronym KISS
So what I often do is I just pull out two things to illustrate the two cliffs we talked about (sometimes I have been known to use salt shakers and even balloon pumps) I talk about how we have a problem in that our sin puts us on this side. I talk about how the gap seperates us from God. I talk about how we want to be with God. Then I share that Jesus has made a way to carry us over. Then I just ask them where they think they are. If you want it even simplier perhaps this will be it, "There is a problem - sin. Jesus made the solution, we must accept it." deecee4jaycee writes on 2001-07-04

How to turn the converstation towards God by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12There are times when I am talking to a friend and I really want to talk about God but I just don´t know how to get it started or once we have talked a bit about spiritual things how I can ask about where they are at with God. Please suggest some other ones if you have some. "Do you have any spiritual belief?" "If you died today and stood before God and He said, "Why should I let you into my perfect Heaven?" what would you say? Hey, let me know where you are in your spiritual journey so I can know you a bit better. Tell me your story. Tell me where you are in your spiritual journey. Colette writes on 2001-01-31

Give them the time it takes by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12People do not get saved overnight but it is a process - some short some long. Still we need to be careful not to rush things so fast that they have not had a chance to think about it. In some ways that is like introducing someone to a good friend of yours and expecting them to get married right away. Well, okay we are not getting people married to God but the commitment level is very much the same and if we rush it how deep is that commitment? At the same time, we need to watch the other side of the situation. Sometimes people are nervous about coming to God and so they just keep putting it off and off. Or the Devil might try to distract them and they just never get around to it. So we should encourage them but never force them into it. Mike Willms writes on 2001-01-25

Share your testimony by Chris Priebe, 2001-01-25Just tell them what difference God has made in your life and how it came to be. This is living proof that God is real.

Examples of Sharing the GospelNow Try God by Chris_Priebe, 2002-10-12Take a look at this example of sharing the gospel. (http://www.nowtrygod.com/) Notice in particular on how they are trying to address the real questions people are asking and feeling. Notice how they do not use Christian jargon but try to keep it simple. I think it would be really good to print this off and preach it very similiar to how it is. It makes a great outline. In the discussion below share some of the key questions this presentation is touching that are relevant to non-believers. If you can, share examples of how those questions have been real in your own life. DGH writes on 2004-10-09

Steps to Peace with God by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12This is a little booklet developed by Billy Graham to share the basics of the Christian faith. It uses an illustration of 2 cliffs where Jesus forms the bridge to cross the gap. † This is one of the two most popular gospel illustrations in the form of a tract (short handout describing how to be saved).† Notice what he believes to be the most important elements of how to be saved.†† To see a version of it in flash web animation go to http://www.a29.com/steps/ Colette writes on 2001-01-31

Power to Change by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12A few years ago Power to Change worked together with the local churches. They aired long commericials on tv by famous people who shared their testimony and talked about how God gives the power to change. They had a number to dial and the people from church would come over and bring an information package and well-designed CD. They also have a web page. http://www.powertochange.com/ You can see their major emphasis is on sharing testimonies of others (which by the way, testimonies are one of the greatest way to share your faith) and answering the basic questions of life. Notice how they use the four spiritual laws instead of the cliff illustration in their gospel section (click here to go there). This is the other most popular tract (short handout describing how to be saved) and has been used all around the world. It is a helpful exercise to compare "Steps to Peace with God" with the "Four Spiritual Laws". What does each one emphasize? How do they present the same thing differently? The other important part about this site is they provide follow-up (which is very important) Colette writes on 2001-01-31

The Key to Life by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12This is done in frames with a standard web format with some pictures and notes. I thought the presentation was unique from other ones and gives some helpful definitions http://homepages.enterprise.net/bcfgoodnews/screenshow/index.htm The writer also gives a full text explanation at the following address http://homepages.enterprise.net/bcfgoodnews/pages/saved.htm Web animations (Gif and Flash) by Chris Priebe, 2000-08-12One thing that people are doing is making little gif images to put on web pages. Take a look at the one(s) below.
Another format that is being used is called flash animation. This is a little program people can add to their computer that allows them to see high-quality animations for free (they make money by charging the artists to buy the programs to make them) Here is an interesting one where they have taken the gospel message and combined it with animation of the cross. Also take a look at some of the other animations on that page. http://www.gieson.com/john316/index.html sue p writes on 2005-11-21
Got Life? by Chris Priebe, 2000-10-07This site uses excellent animation to bring the Gospel message home. Notice how it addresses key issues people ask and also shows some evidence of there being a God.

Step Up to Life by Chris Priebe, 2001-01-23I really like this presentation and am thinking of getting the transperencies for some of the seminars. It goes through the steps people go through before becoming a Christian and helps people along through them. A very different and fresh approach. What do you suppose are some of the most emphasied points in this presentation

Reaching the Lost Sheep. by Mspastwife, 2001-02-17I have recently found out how the gospel is being spread thru the computer, and I am amazed at how touching those things are; [especially the digitrac´s]even as an older christian . I think the main thing is just getting out there, and being yourself with God´s guidance. That´s the best way to share the Gospel. And I find that even most of the lost know John 3:16 , and understand it. I also like John10:9,but Romans10:9 is my favorite. It explains how to be saved, and gives an assurance of salvation. The key is just to reach out! lenblaides writes on 2001-05-12
