It is said that there is a reason God gave us two ears and one mouth.  I don´t know if you have ever had a salesman come to your door.  It seems that as soon as they come in all they want to do is sell you their product, they are not interested in you or your health or whatever just to make a buck.  We need to be really careful not to peddle the gospel because this too can be very annoying and turn someone who was interested into someone who wants to stay a long way off.

When I meet someone I try to listen to them as much as I can.  I want to know who they are as a person, what they like and hate, how they are.  Only once I have truly listened and they know I care about them as a person will they care about the One I hold to be most dear.

One of my professors in Bible school said over and over again, "People won´t care how much you know until they know how much you care"

I had the privilege of being asked to go online with a young person a few weeks ago that had been present two years ago at the Wedgewood Baptist Church shooting....this young person is still quite troubled about not being able to stop the killings. The lady that called me was very fearful for this young person and did not wish to talk alone so we went to buddy chat and I began "introducing" myself to this youngster. We found lots of common ground...music, friends that are police officers, people that we both knew who died that night....and all the while my friend kept repeating the same question that she had posed to the teen previously finally, after trying to tell me about a verse from a song that we both consider awesome and how that verse was speaking to the teen, she interrupted with the same question and this hurting teenager "hit the x". Now my friend is an intelligent woman...she is a paralegal but, she was absolutely furious with me for not making this young person stick to the question....so, I asked her to please scroll back over the conversation and see if I had or had not done as she requested. A short time later, she IM´d me and said that she had printed out the conversation and was astounded at the times that I had asked the teen that same question but, in different terms and with RAPPORT.

In my old youth group, I was known as the ´advice giver.´ they would always come to me with problems. I would give them a wordly example, explain how it works in their life, then I would go and get a bible, or just quote Godly advice. I believe you need to listen first then give the advice. If you talk to soon, you won´t know the whole problem.

We need to learn to love them and listen to them. We can share the gospel with them to but we must learn to listen to them for they know we care about them.

Someone somewhere said that we only have one mouth and two ears and that we should use them proportionally. Working with the youth group at our church, THAT has been super important!!

I agree. My work in nursing homes has taught me to be a good listener and to be patient. I love getting to know the residents. They have led such exciting lives. They have so much to tell and not many who listen. I think that is why God sent me there. I didn¥t use to be a good listener unless it was a good story and now I have totally changed. I love to listen. Plus working with the elderly you have to first show them that you are committed because so many people come and go from their life they are scared to get attached.

Trouble here....
This lesson of listening ( and seeing ) is coming home to me especially in the past couple of months.
We as a family are crazeee for ferrets. One day not to long ago my wife¥s stopped in the middle of the street, waiting for a runaway ferret to get off the road. Weeellll, of course we were interested! I know the area where he was found, and I knew there were kids in a house close by, and I knew kids would know where a ferret lived. To make a short story long, because of a ferret, a 9 year old and a 13 year old boys have been saved, the Dad has been saved in JAIL, and tomorrow the Mother, and about 6 kids are coming to church.
Telling the story, I found a fellow at work who has two ferret here in town, and looking for another. I had information about adopting a ferret, and that led the Pastor and me to his doorstep to give him the info ( that God loves him ). He will be saved in answer to prayer, because I listened and saw. Kind of like having ¥ keys to the kingdom ¥.
